Location: Dunbar

Charlotte is a care experienced campaigner who is passionate about equality for all, with a particular interest in those who have experienced the care system and survivors of child abuse. This passion stems from her own lived experience of both being care experienced and suffering systemic abuse as a child.  These experiences have been a focal point throughout all aspects of activism she has been involved in recent years.

As Public Affairs Support Officer for Who Cares? Scotland, she strives to make the voices of care experienced people heard, particularly those with experiences that are often overlooked in discussions surrounding the care system. This has led her to work alongside care experienced people from all walks of life, from young people in prison to care experienced parents. In doing this, Charlotte has played a significant role in achieving legislative and policy changes for care experienced people across Scotland. She is most proud of her part in ensuring that care experienced parents are recognised as a group of people in the Scottish Government’s most recent programme for government.

In her role as National Equalities Officer for Young Scots for Independence, Charlotte has fought continuously to see care experience embedded within party structures as an equalities issue. With her leadership, the YSI is the first youth wing of a political party to enshrine care experience within its constitution and it is now treated the same as other protected characteristics. She has continued to grow within this role and has used her position to; speak out against transphobia; advocate for the Scots Lied campaign around Scotland, and to support members from minority backgrounds to become more involved in politics.

Aside from activism, Charlotte uses her platform to challenge the status quo on difficult issues. Earlier this year, Charlotte wrote an open letter to the man who sexually abused her for years when she was a small child. The intention of the letter was to highlight the lifelong impact of sexual violence and to invite members of the public to be mindful of this impact when accusations against celebrities come to a head.
