Iris Duane, 30 under 30 nominee in 2023 smiling at the camera.

I am incredibly proud and honoured to be nominated for the 30 under 30 list this year and I am incredibly happy to be recognised for my efforts in both volunteering and improving the student experience during my time at university as well as my advocacy within politics for the Scottish Green Party.

My nomination was put forward for my work both within the Queen Margaret Union, one of the student unions at the University of Glasgow, as well as my work with the UniofG Greens and various other societies on the UofG Campus. Since coming to university, I have loved the opportunities that have been afforded to me and found myself getting into many things that were once very unfamiliar to me. Through my work at the union, I have found a place for my advocacy by working on many projects, such as providing more support and provision for survivors of Gender-based violence, supporting students through their transition into university and planning the last freshers’ week!

As a young trans woman of colour, I hope that I can continue to work on improving the world around me, ensuring it works for everyone! In the future I hope to not only continue my work in advocacy and party politics but use the positions I am lucky to have, to create a safer and more welcoming world!
